When a customer searches for a local service, Google shows three businesses in the "map pack" at the top of the results. That map pack gets roughly 44% of all clicks on a local search page. If you're not in those three spots, you're handing leads to whoever is.
The good news: optimizing your Google Business Profile (GBP) is completely free. The bad news: most local businesses fill out the basics and stop. Here's the full checklist we run for every client we build a site for.
1. Claim and Verify Your Profile
Go to google.com/business and search for your business name. One of three things will happen:
- Google already auto-created a listing for you. Claim it.
- Your business isn't there. Create a new one.
- Someone else claimed it (rare, but it happens). Request ownership transfer through Google's support.
Then verify. Google now offers phone, email, video, and postcard verification depending on your category. Until you're verified, you can't edit anything else on this list.
2. Get Your NAP Consistent Everywhere
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. This must match exactly across your website, your GBP, and every directory you're listed on (Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, YellowPages).
- Same spelling of your business name (no "Inc." in one place and not another)
- Same address format ("Unit 2" vs "#2" matters more than you'd think)
- Same phone number (use your primary number, not a tracking number, unless you really know what you're doing)
Google cross-references these listings. Inconsistent NAP is one of the top reasons local businesses don't rank — Google can't trust a business whose address keeps changing.
3. Choose the Right Primary Category
This is the single most important field on your entire profile. Google uses your primary category to decide which searches you show up for.
- Be specific. "Plumber" beats "Contractor." "Italian Restaurant" beats "Restaurant." "Hair Salon" beats "Beauty Salon."
- You can add up to 9 secondary categories, but your primary should describe the thing you do most.
- Research competitors: search your keyword, click the top 3 businesses, and see what categories they use (it's public on their profile).
4. Fill Out Every Single Field
Google rewards complete profiles. Incomplete profiles get filtered out. Fill out:
- Services — with descriptions and prices where relevant
- Products — for retail stores and restaurants (add your menu items)
- Attributes — "Women-led," "Wheelchair accessible," "Accepts credit cards," "Free Wi-Fi." These show up as filters customers use.
- Hours — including special holiday hours, set in advance
- Service area — list the cities or regions you serve, not just your address (critical for trades and mobile services)
- Business description — 750 characters max. Use keywords naturally. No links allowed.
5. Upload Photos Regularly
According to BrightLocal, listings with 100+ photos get 520% more calls and 2,717% more direction requests than listings with fewer. That is not a typo.
- Add your logo and a cover photo first
- Upload interior, exterior, team, and "at work" photos
- Add new photos monthly — Google treats recent uploads as a signal that your business is active and open
- Skip stock photos. Real photos of your actual work, your actual team, and your actual storefront build trust. Stock photos do the opposite.
6. Collect and Respond to Reviews
Reviews are the #1 local ranking factor after proximity. You need:
- Quantity — aim for 50+, then keep going
- Recency — a steady stream beats a flood once a year
- Keywords — happy customers naturally mention "plumber," "great haircut," "fixed my AC" — that's free SEO
- Star rating — 4.5+ is the target. Below 4.0 and you start losing clicks even when you rank.
Ask every happy customer for a review (a follow-up text the same day works best). Then respond to every review — positive and negative — within 24 hours. Responding shows Google (and future customers reading) that you're engaged and active.
7. Post Updates Weekly
GBP has a "Posts" feature that lets you publish updates, offers, and events directly to your profile. Posts expire after 7 days (offers last longer).
- Post weekly: a new service, a seasonal promo, a behind-the-scenes photo
- Each post is another signal to Google that your profile is actively managed
- Always include a CTA button ("Book now," "Call today," "Get directions")
Most local businesses never touch the Posts feature. Doing it weekly puts you ahead of 80% of your competitors instantly.
8. Enable Messaging and Manage Q&A
- Turn on messaging so customers can text you directly from the listing (respond within 24h or Google flags it)
- Monitor the Q&A section — answer questions, and seed a few common ones yourself (yes, owners can answer their own Q&A, and you should)
- Unanswered questions get answered by random strangers. Don't let that happen to your business.
9. Track With Insights
GBP's free Insights tab shows you exactly how people are finding you:
- How many viewed your profile (and the trend over time)
- How they found you — direct search (your name) vs. discovery search (a keyword like "plumber near me")
- The actual keywords people typed
- How many called, clicked directions, or visited your site
Review this monthly. It tells you what's working and which keywords to double down on with your website content.
What This Actually Delivers
A fully optimized Google Business Profile typically generates 2 to 5 extra leads per week for a local business — without spending a dollar on ads. For a plumber averaging $500 per job, that's $4,000 to $10,000 a month in additional revenue from a free listing.
Your Google Business Profile is free. Not optimizing it is the most expensive mistake in local marketing.
